Master’s and Ph.D. Programs in Architecture
Master’s Program
Architecture, as a field of knowledge and practice, engages with humans and society. The foundation of architectural knowledge lies in the interaction between humans and space, the built environment, interaction, and communication. Architectural education is organized around processes such as design, representation, implementation, history, conservation-restoration, and renovation, as well as the elements that constitute space, such as materials, structure, texture, light, and color. This organization produces professional and research fields. Moreover, the integration of interdisciplinary approaches through engineering and social sciences, with which the profession interacts, is of great importance in architectural education. With this perspective, undergraduate and postgraduate education planned in the field of architectural knowledge is noteworthy.
At Abdullah Gül University (AGÜ), architectural education offers unique features with its innovative and flexible curriculum. Practical education based on research and project-oriented studies is carried out in the core areas of architecture such as architectural history and theory, building and construction, conservation-restoration, and design, as well as in disciplines closely related to architecture such as information technology, environment, advanced materials, and cultural-art management. With this vision, the AGÜ Department of Architecture aims to educate architects who are innovative, aware of global issues, and capable of producing solutions to these problems, and who possess a culture of interdisciplinary work and research.
In this context, it is seen as an inevitable necessity for our undergraduate department to conduct education and research activities at the postgraduate level to genuinely gain a research mission. It is intended to support AGÜ’s goal of becoming one of the leading national and international research centers in the field of architecture with thesis-based master’s education conducted in English, with local and international faculty experts in their fields.
The English Master’s Program with Thesis in Architecture is designed to provide education to professionals who have received undergraduate education in fields such as Architecture, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, Sociology, and Archaeology. The program focuses on research, studies, and applications on space and is expected to support the following needs of the architectural profession:
- The program aims to produce academic knowledge in the field of architecture with a research, study, and application-oriented approach, focusing on space and interdisciplinary expertise. It aims to expand the field of architectural knowledge nationally and internationally through qualitative and quantitative research techniques and experimental methods. The program will train researchers who will focus on the field of architectural knowledge.
- The program, conducted in English, aims to train researchers not only specific to Turkey but also globally, particularly in geographies with which it has close relationships.
- In line with AGÜ’s mission and vision, the program aims to transform the knowledge produced in the master’s program into social benefit through collaborations with public and civil society organizations and sectors it is closely related to.
- The program aims to contribute significantly to the international visibility of the knowledge produced in the field of architecture with the participation of international students and faculty members. It aims to provide significant contributions to the international visibility of the knowledge produced in the field of architecture.
The AGÜ Master’s Program in Architecture focuses on topics such as the design, representation, construction, and installation of space, its history, conservation, and restoration, its use, interaction with its users and environment, communication, and transformation. In this context, research and studies are expected to be conducted in areas such as building, built environments, and human-society centered design, history, construction techniques, building materials and technologies, sociology, philosophy, and archaeology.
Ph.D. Program
Architecture can be defined as a field of knowledge focusing on space and its production. Architectural knowledge produces professional and research fields through processes such as the design, construction, perception, representation, use, and transformation of space. The cognitive and objective production processes of space, from its design to its construction and use, interact and communicate with fields such as science and technology, history, culture, sociology, economics, and aesthetics.
In this context, the AGÜ Ph.D. Program in Architecture is designed to provide advanced level education to professionals who have received master’s education in the fields of science and social sciences, focusing on research, studies, and applications on space. The program is expected to support the following needs of the architectural profession:
- There are around one hundred active architecture departments in public and private universities across Turkey, and new ones are being established. Considering the existing academic workforce, there is a clear need for faculty members to work in architecture departments. Given that current Ph.D. programs are concentrated in central locations such as Istanbul and Ankara, it is evident that a Ph.D. program to be established in a central city of Anatolia like Kayseri would contribute significantly as an important alternative in producing the needed academic workforce.
- The Ph.D. program conducted in English aims to train academic workforce and researchers not only specific to Turkey but also globally, particularly in geographies with which it has close relationships.
- The program aims to create new and active research/study areas in interaction and communication with fields of science and social sciences, supporting the production and development of knowledge. It aims to bring together qualified researchers who have received undergraduate and master’s education in architecture, engineering, and social sciences and who wish to specialize in space, aiming to produce and develop multidimensional academic knowledge.
- In line with AGÜ’s mission and vision, the program aims to transform the expert-level knowledge produced in the Ph.D. program into social benefit through collaborations with public and civil society organizations and sectors it is closely related to.
- The program aims to contribute significantly to the international visibility of the knowledge produced in the field of architecture with the participation of international students and faculty members.
